In the Amazon department of Madre de Dios, the Tambopata National Reserve displays its wealth in the form of colors, sounds, heat and life. Mammals, birds, reptiles and butterflies are shown without reservation; thousands of kinds of trees and flowers greet us as we pass; and aquatic creatures in their natural habitat play with our curiosity, sometimes posing for the camera. Tambopata is perfect for discovering the jungle. And fall in love with her forever.
Upon your arrival at the airport or bus station, we will pick you up and take you to our office to finalize details. Next, we will board our vehicle at the office and take a journey of approximately one hour to the community of Filadelfia. From there, we will board a boat and navigate upstream on the Tambopata River for about 10 minutes, arriving at the comfortable facilities of our jungle lodge.
After a delicious lunch, we will embark on a more than two-hour walk through the dense tropical rainforest, guided by an expert local guide. We will explore trails where medicinal plants and ancient trees, such as Brazil nut and tonka bean trees, can be found. From the 45-meter-high (148 ft) birdwatching tower, we’ll have the opportunity to spot wildlife including monkeys, toucans, parrots, macaws, squirrels, reptiles, etc. You’ll also enjoy a beautiful sunset over the jungle.
In the evening, we’ll embark on a boat ride to discover nocturnal wildlife along the Tambopata River. During this night safari, you’ll have the opportunity to spot caimans of different sizes, owls, nightjars, and, with a bit of luck, the capybara, the world’s largest rodent. This guided tour offers an unforgettable experience in Amazon wildlife observation.
At dawn, we board our boat and sail along the Tambopata River, delving into the lush Amazon rainforest. Upon reaching the Chuncho clay lick, we will be immersed in a dazzling display of colors and sounds: parrots and macaws in their natural habitat, creating a visual symphony that will capture our attention.
In the afternoon, we return to the city via the same route we used to reach the first hotel. From there, we take a vehicle for about 15 minutes to Yacumama Lake, renowned for its scenic beauty and stunning sunsets. The lake is home to numerous macaws, parrots, and parakeets, and with a bit of luck, we might also spot black caimans and river otters.
At Yacumama Lake, we’ll navigate with a rowboat to our prime piranha fishing spot. We’ll take photos of the piranhas we catch and then release them back into the water to maintain the local ecosystem. As the sun begins to set, we’ll return to the dock, board our boat, and head back to the hotel for a well-deserved, relaxing evening.
Sunrise is one of the best times to observe the abundant wildlife at Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. We will walk along a 3 km (1.8 miles) trail through the jungle, amazed by the natural richness of the area. Upon arrival, we will board a canoe to explore Sandoval Lake, where you will have the chance to spot black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, and more.
In the afternoon, we will take guided walks along the trails of our lodge, exploring the unique biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. Our expert guides will show you a variety of medicinal plants, towering trees, and exotic wildlife such as toucans, macaws, and small mammals. These walks will allow you to appreciate the natural beauty of the area and gain a deeper understanding of the ecosystems that thrive in this vibrant region.
As night falls, the jungle reveals its fascinating nocturnal life. Equipped with flashlights, we will explore the trails in search of nighttime wildlife such as porcupines, sloths, spiders, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, and owls.
After enjoying a delicious Amazonian breakfast and a short rest, we’ll begin a walk along a trail leading to one of the majestic trees over 700 years old. There, we’ll start our journey on the hanging bridges installed between the trees. In this area of the forest known as the “canopy,” you’ll have the chance to observe the rich fauna as we cross the bridges. You may spot toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, epiphytic plants, and much more.
Later, we’ll return to the city to collect your luggage if you left it at our office. Afterward, we’ll transfer you to the airport or, if you have a bus ticket, to the bus station.
Note: Wear clothing in more discreet tones like green, beige, gray, brown, black, etc. These colors blend better with the natural environment, allowing you to enjoy the wildlife without disturbing it and helping you maintain a low profile in the wild.
