The Animal Rescue Center “Dos Loritos” is located in Pilcopalta, a small village in the Peruvian jungle, about 5 hours by road from Cusco. This rescue center is situated in the buffer zone of Manu National Park, one of the most important protected areas in the Amazon.

The Rescue Center was founded by the Augusto family, who began their work in 2011 after rescuing two small parrots (hence the name “Two Parrots”), victims of illegal wildlife trafficking. Over time, the demand for rescuing and caring for animals grew, prompting the family to dedicate more resources and attention to the project, making it their full-time occupation in 2016. The center operates as a non-profit organization.
The mission of the Rescue Center is to ensure the well-being of wild animals affected by wildlife trafficking or habitat destruction. The center provides medical care, food, and a natural environment for animals to readjust to wild life. When possible, animals live freely without cages, allowing them to acclimate before being reintroduced into protected areas like Manu National Park. Approximately 90% of the animals at the center live in freedom, and over 80 species have been rehabilitated.
The Rescue Center also offers visitors the chance to closely interact with some of the rescued animals. Some of these animals, which cannot be released due to their conditions, are friendly and allow interaction with visitors. Other animals, especially younger ones, require care until they can fend for themselves. Visitors can learn more about the Amazonian wildlife and the importance of conservation, as well as experience firsthand the rehabilitation and protection work carried out at the center.
This place offers a valuable volunteer opportunity for those wishing to get involved in protecting Amazonian wildlife. Volunteers participate in essential tasks such as feeding and caring for the animals, maintaining their enclosures, and preparing them for reintroduction into protected areas like Manu National Park. In addition to contributing to conservation, volunteers experience an immersive experience in the jungle, connecting with nature and gaining knowledge about local ecosystems.
