Many of our guests tell us the same thing: they would love to explore the Amazon, but they also want time to visit other destinations in Peru. We completely understand that.
For this reason, we created our 5-Day Manu National Park Reserved Zone Tour—a carefully designed program that allows you to truly experience the jungle.
This is not a short, commercial 3- or 4-day Manu tour. In five days, you travel deep into the Reserved Zone, where the rainforest is untouched, wildlife is abundant, and the Amazon feels wild and real.
ITINERARY
5-Day Manu Reserved Zone Jungle Adventure
Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Rainforest
Early departure from Cusco, crossing the Andes and the charming town of Paucartambo before entering Manu National Park through Acjanaco Pass. A walk in the cloud forest gives us the chance to spot the famous cock-of-the-rock, toucans, quetzals, and monkeys. Arrival at the lodge in the afternoon, with an optional night walk to look for nocturnal wildlife.
Day 2: River Journey into the Manu Reserved Zone
We travel to Atalaya Port and continue by boat deep into the Reserved Zone, one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth. Along the river, we may see monkeys, caimans, capybaras, macaws, and possibly even a jaguar. After a jungle walk, we settle into the lodge and, for those who wish, enjoy another night excursion.
Day 3: Oxbow Lake, Macaw Clay Lick & Cultural Experience
An early visit to Salvador Oxbow Lake to look for giant river otters, monkeys, and many bird species. Later, we observe macaws at a nearby clay lick and, in the afternoon, learn traditional archery with local indigenous people, followed by a relaxing forest walk and optional night activity.
Day 4: Deeper into the Reserved Zone
Boat travel continues along the river, offering more chances to spot wildlife on the riverbanks. Arrival at Dorado Lodge in the afternoon to rest, followed by a guided night walk to search for frogs, owls, insects, and other nocturnal animals.
Day 5: Return to Cusco
After a final river journey back to Atalaya Port, we travel by road to Cusco, enjoying the last views of the rainforest and mountains, arriving in the early evening.

What to Pack for a 5-Day Manu Reserved Zone Tour
Packing for the Manu Reserved Zone is about being comfortable and prepared for a warm, humid, and sometimes rainy environment.
Clothing: Choose lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying clothes. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants are recommended for protection against insects and sun. A light jacket is useful for early mornings in the cloud forest.
Footwear: Rubber boots are provided at the lodge and are ideal for jungle walks. You only need to bring comfortable shoes for travel and a pair of sandals or flip-flops for use at the lodge, along with several pairs of quick-dry socks.
Rain Gear: A light rain jacket or poncho is essential, especially for boat rides and forest walks. A small waterproof daypack or dry bag will help keep your valuables safe.
Personal Items: Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, basic toiletries, and any personal medication. A headlamp or small flashlight is useful for night activities.
Extras: Binoculars, a camera, a reusable water bottle, a hat, and some cash for small expenses or tips are also recommended.
Manu Reserved Zone Travel Tips
- Follow your guide at all times. Their experience is key for safety and for spotting wildlife you might otherwise miss.
- Move quietly and be patient. Many animals are shy; the calmer the group, the better the chances of seeing them.
- Protect yourself from the elements. Use insect repellent, sunscreen, and stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Be flexible. Weather and wildlife don’t follow a schedule, and some of the best moments happen unexpectedly.
- Enjoy the experience. Put the phone away sometimes, listen to the sounds of the forest, and fully take in the beauty of the Amazon.
Extended Tours in Manu Reserved Zone
If you have more time to explore the Amazon, you can choose longer programs of 6, 7, or 8 days in Manu Reserved Zone. These itineraries follow the same protected route and depth limits set by the park authorities, but the extra days allow for a slower pace and a richer experience.
Instead of going deeper into restricted areas, the additional time is used to enjoy more activities and without rushing. This means longer wildlife observation along the rivers, more visits to oxbow lakes, wildlife sanctuaries, macaw clay licks, additional jungle walks, and more night excursions, when many species are active, and much more.
Another alternative for travelers with extra days is to combine Manu with other Amazon destinations, such as Puerto Maldonado. This gives you the chance to explore different ecosystems, visit more lakes and canopy platforms, and take part in a wider range of activities, while still keeping the Manu Reserved Zone as the highlight of your journey.
