3‑day Manu National Park tour itinerary

Looking for a quick yet unforgettable jungle experience from Cusco? Our 3-day Manu National Park tour is the ideal way to explore the edge of the Amazon without traveling too far. Manu is the closest and most biodiverse jungle destination near Cusco, offering a deep connection with nature in a short amount of time.

This tour takes you into the heart of the Manu Cultural Zone, where lush rainforest, unique wildlife, and stunning river landscapes await. It’s perfect for travelers with limited time who still want to immerse themselves in the magic of the Peruvian Amazon.

Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – – Rainforest Wildlife Encounter

Your adventure into Manu National Park begins with the departure from Cusco, crossing the majestic Andes and descending into the lush, misty cloud forest. This scenic drive offers panoramic views of mountains, waterfalls, and deep valleys before welcoming you into the Amazonian foothills.

Along the route, we’ll make several stops to explore the rich biodiversity of the area. With binoculars in hand, you’ll search for vibrant bird species such as toucans, quetzals, trogons, and the iconic Cock of the Rock, Peru’s national bird, known for its bright red plumage and impressive mating rituals at its lek.

The journey also offers chances to spot troops of monkeys leaping through the treetops—keep an eye out for the playful brown capuchin monkeys, the agile squirrel monkeys, and the powerful woolly monkeys, all commonly seen in this region of the Andes to Amazon route.

As evening falls, we arrive at a charming eco-lodge nestled in the rainforest, where you’ll sleep surrounded by the natural sounds of the jungle.

Leks are gathering spots where the cock-of-the-rock birds perform their spectacular mating rituals.

Day 2: Hummingbird Garden – Atalaya Port – Machuwasi Oxbow Lake – Night Jungle Walk

We begin the day with a visit to a vibrant hummingbird garden, where dozens of dazzling hummingbird species flutter among the flowers. While walking through this peaceful area, we may also spot monkeys, small mammals, and other exotic birds. This short hike offers a perfect introduction to the wildlife of the lower jungle.

Next, we continue to Atalaya Port, a key gateway to the Amazon. Here, we board our boat for a scenic 40-minute ride on the Alto Madre de Dios River. The journey brings us to our cozy jungle lodge, located near the river and surrounded by lush forest.

In the afternoon, we set out to explore the serene Machuwasi oxbow lake, a biodiversity hotspot ideal for observing hoatzins, capybaras, toucans, and more. As dusk settles, we prepare for an exciting night walk through the rainforest, guided by flashlight in search of snakes, spiders, frogs, and other nocturnal wildlife that come alive after dark.

Sailing on the Alto Madre de Dios River, formerly known as Amaru Mayu, a name that changed when the Spanish arrived and began evangelizing the jungle.

Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick – Wildlife Rescue Center – Coca Plantation – Return to Cusco

We start the morning with a visit to a vibrant parrot clay lick, where dozens of parrots and parakeets gather to feed on the mineral-rich soil—an unforgettable wildlife spectacle and a must-see for bird lovers.

Afterward, we visit a Wildlife Rescue Center, a sanctuary dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of animals rescued from illegal trafficking. Here, you’ll meet species like monkeys, macaws, peccaries, sloths, turtles, while learning about conservation efforts in the Amazon.

Before returning, we stop at a local coca plantation to discover the cultural and historical importance of this sacred plant in the Andean and Amazonian world.

Then, we begin our journey back to Cusco, driving through breathtaking jungle landscapes and cloud forest, bringing a perfect close to this unforgettable Manu rainforest experience.

To fully enjoy this activity when visiting the clay lick, it’s essential to wake up early, as the parrots are most active during the early morning hours.
